Daily 5 Book Study: Chapter 2

I've just returned from a trip to the beach! It was so nice to read chapter 2 of The Daily 5 while sitting on the balcony drinking my coffee! **Please note that the following is only my opinion and thoughts on how I implement D5 in my classroom. These thoughts and ideas are not endorsed by the 2 sisters or their publisher Stenhouse. When setting up the structure for D5, the sisters list the following as their core foundations: Trusting Students Providing Choice Nurturing Community Creating a Sense of Urgency Building Stamina Staying Out of Students' Way Trust When I first began D5 in my classroom, trusting students was very hard for me. I kept thinking that if I didn't continually "check" on the students, how would they stay on task? Surely if I left them alone and … [Read more...]

Fun with Compound Words! {freebie}

We had SO much fun learning about compound words! The students learned that a compound word is made when two words are put together. Pan + Cake = Pancake! I showed the students how to use their hands for this and they LOVED it! I noticed so many of them putting one hand out, two hands out, and then CLAP together to make a compound word! I made Compound Words Flip Books for the students to practice creating and reading Compound Words. The students cut out their words and then we stapled them onto their book. They created two books of compound words that included the words house and hand. The students took turns reading their books to partners and identified each word using their hands. Hand + Shake = Handshake! Dog + House = Doghouse! We also completed "Illustrate the … [Read more...]

Veteran’s Day & Thanksgiving!

Veteran's Day at Mableton is always so special. Earlier this year we read the book Hero Dad and wrote letters to the Soliders. To celebrate Veteran's Day we made camouflage hats and enjoyed the Veteran's Day Program in the afternoon. Mr. Reggie Ewing was the guest speaker this year. He did an awesome job! I taught 2nd grade to his son, Daniel last year. Look for Daniel to be featured in an upcoming post. He recently visited our classroom as a guest reader! In November, we also enjoyed our Thanksgiving Feast. We had parents, grandparents, and other family members join us for lunch! We also completed Pilgrim writing, and the students wrote about what life would be like if they were a Pilgrim girl or boy. For Homework, each student decorated a plain, boring Turkey … [Read more...]

Thank You Soldier!

Our school is participating in The Bert Show's Big Thank You! The Bert Show is encouraging schools, churches, businesses, neighborhoods, children, teenagers, and adults to write a heart-felt thank you letter to a Soldier. During the Holiday Season this year, there will be more than 400,000 troops deployed overseas. The Big Thank You wants to ensure that each Soldier receives a thank you letter from someone on Thanksgiving Day. Our school set a goal of 2,011 letters. For those of you that know Mableton Elementary, you know that we are a tiny school of only 450 students. This goal definitely proved to be a challenge for us. Our class was very excited to participate in the letter writing and we made our own class goal of 100 letters! To introduce the campaign to the students, I read the … [Read more...]
