Making Connections!

During the first weeks of school, I shared my “All About Me” bag with our class. One of the things that I shared was that one of my favorite places is Hawaii. The students became very interested in Hawaii and throughout the school year I have shared many experiences with them.

One of the experiences that I shared during Writer’s Workshop was about hiking on Mount Kilauea – one of the world’s most active volcanoes. This volcano is located on the Big Island of Hawaii and has been erupting continuously since 1983.

This week during our D.E.A.R. time, one of the students was reading a new Science reader that had just been delivered from Scholastic. The student was eagerly reading the new book about Volcanoes and then excitedly said “I just made a text-to-world connection!” He excitedly showed me that he was reading all about Mount Kilauea and that he was connecting what he had already learned from my experience and relating it to the real world facts found in his book! It is so exciting to see all of the students in our class so excited about Reading!
